SARS denies involvement in Bruma operation

A number of shops were closed at the Bruma Oriental City after various authorities conducted an operation at the premises.

The South African Revenue Services (SARS) denied any involvement in the operation that led to the closure of shops in the Bruma Oriental City on Friday, October 30.

A number of shops were closed at the Bruma Oriental City after various authorities conducted an operation at the premises.

The operation included the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), the Tswane Metropolitan Police Department (TMPD) and the SAPS.

Initial reports were that SARS officials were part of the operation.

Ms Janine Lyn, the marketing manager of Oriental City Investment, said the officials were there to check if there was brand copyright infringement by the shops at the centre.

“Some shop owners decided to close on their accord,” she said.

The SARS spokesperson, Mr Sandile Memela, said the SARS was not part of this operation.

The JMPD spokesperson, Inspector Edna Mamonyane, said further clarification regarding the operation will be forwarded to the EXPRESS.

At the time of going to print, she had not commented on the EXPRESS’ request for further details.

Ms Lyn said trading in the mall returned to normal after the operation.
