Owner’s protector is recovering

“The scene was traumatic for everyone including the dog,” Inspector Stephen Maila.

A cross Chow Chow that protected its business owner’s body for hours after the robbery on St Fransquin Street in Malarven on Monday, December 7 is recuperating in Sandton SPCA.

Inspector Stephen Maila from Sandton SPCA said the situation of the dog has improved a lot since the Monday.

“The scene there was difficult for everyone including the dog. It was too traumatic for the dog to its owner sleeping in the blood and not responding he usually does. Also number of people around him was too much for the dog,” Inspector Maila said.

He said the dog was not a vicious dog but a calm dog.

“It was just responding to the situation. It was trying to protect its owner. It understood what had just happened. But since it has been here it is calm. ” he said.

He said the dog will stay at SPCA until the family decide about it.

He said family members are calling now and again to check how it is doing.

“I think they will a decision after the funeral. But this dog can go back to it family, it is sociable. Depend if they want to move from the area as some people after this kind of incidents they do. Sometimes an area can be traumatic for people and dogs too. But with some help they may readjust and stay in their area,” Inspector Maila said.

Cleveland SAPS spokesperson, Constable Mpho Mashakane said old woman was also raped during the incident.
