Ekurhuleni Metro Police Chief Bafana Mahlabe has resigned from his post with immediate effect.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police Chief Bafana Mahlabe has resigned from his post with immediate effect.

Mahlabe handed in his resignation letter to the acting city manager Dr Imogen Mashazi yesterday.

Announcing the news to the media this morning, Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Clr Mzwandile Masina said that ‘in the letter Mr Mahlabe cited that he wishes to pursue business interests’.

“Although this development was unexpected, after carefully considering the matter and consultation with relevant stakeholders, I have accepted the resignation of the Chief of Police,” said Clr Masina.

Clr Masina announced that the city had appointed the deputy chief of police in charge of logistics General Isaac Mapiyeye, who has 31 years’ experience in policing, as the acting chief of police with effect from December 1 until the position is filled within the next three months as prescribed by Legislation.
