Six more super structures for ‘Billboardview’

Clr Humphreys said the CoE had not approved the applications yet.

If all goes according to plan, six companies will have their names up in lights along Gillooly’s Interchange.

Six application for more super billboards have been sent to the ward 20 councillor, Clr jill Humphreys’ opinion.

She said she is going to reject the applications.

“The bylaws allow for one super billboard per 250 metres along highways. It would seem the people are aiming for that. They want to make sure that every open space next to the highway has a billboard. If that is the case and they are all allowed to be put up, we will end up with about eight billboards per kilometre, which is excessive,” said Clr Humphreys.

She said the boards are planned for and around the Gillooly’s Interchange with two more planned for construction inside Gillooly’s Farm.

“They are looking to place one along Skeen Boulevard, one on Concord Road West near Van der Linde Road and another one on Boeing Road East, close to where the City Of Ekurhuleni removed the illegal one recently,” said Clr Humphreys.

She said the billboard on Boeing Road is planned to be constructed over the road.

The application comes exactly a year after an outcry broke about the CoE’s approval for the mounting of over 1o billboards opn bridges along major highways around Bedfordview.

At the time, there was concern over whether the bridges would be able to take the weight exerted by the structures, which are placed on either side of the bridges.

Also in 2016, residents witnessed the construction of the biggest billboard Bedfordview had seen yet, a 90-metre super structure built on the Gillooly’s Farm grounds.

Clr Humphreys said the CoE had not approved the applications.

“From my side, I will say no,” she said.
