Jeppe SAPS spokesman Richard Munyai said SAPS celebrates the event every year.

“Each police station usually holds their own event, but this year we decided to combine it as a cluster,” he said.

Richard Zwane, an elderly resident at Bertrams, said he was happy that South Africa is now a democratic country.

“It’s all thanks to Tata,” he said.

Residents were given blankets and food parcels.

The event was sponsored by Kia Motors, Gift of the Givers, Engen, Revelation Church and MES Irene.

Jeppe and Yeoville SAPS social crime prevention teams transported residents to and from the venue.
