BEZ VALLEY–Aiming for a healthier ward.

Bez Valley resident and Ward 66 committee member Maria Masalisa said she would like to see a healthy ward.

Masalisa’s portfolio is health.

“We have so many health hazards in our ward that we need to address. We can only win that battle if we work together as a community and clean our ward, “ said Masalisa.

She said dumping and overcrowding were major problems in the ward because they cause health hazards.

“Filth attracts rats and that is a health hazard because children can easily pick up a virus or something that can be harmful to them. Overcrowding has the potential to spread a virus if one gets sick. Viruses spread to those who are living with the person who is sick,” said Masalisa.

She said residents need to get more involved in their health by participating in activities happening at local clinics.

“We have a vegetable garden at Bez Valley clinic and we would love for the community to be involved in it and be the ones looking after these gardens,” said Masalisa.

She plans to organise awareness events in the community which will encourage people to visit clinics and take better care of themselves.

“Awareness plays a big role in sharing information because that is when we can identify how many people are actually aware of their state of health,” said Masalisa.

She urged residents to work with the local clinics and support their awareness campaigns.

“My wish for Ward 66 is to have a clean and healthy ward and that is possible if we work together as a community. We need to put our health first as residents and that means cleaning up our ward too,” said Masalisa.
