“I can barely sleep with the noise that people make. Some people drink until very early in the morning. The businesses in this area don’t operate within the operating hours. The music they play is too loud and my child, who is doing matric, cannot study at all because of the noise,” said a resident.

Another resident said some people buy alcohol late at the taverns.

“They drink on the road and throw bottles into our yards. Some break bottles on pavements and it’s impossible to pick up bottles in front of my house every day,” he said.

Chairperson of the Sector Three Crime Forum Mike Spadino said the Gauteng Liquor Board must intervene.

Residents and business owners attended the meeting.

“Some businesses do not adhere to proposed times of 9pm as agreed to with the SAPS. We will work closely with the liquor board to ensure compliance. People must take into consideration that they stand a high risk of being robbed if their businesses operate until late. In order to reduce crime, we need to follow proper procedure.

“There will be meetings between various role players to look at solutions to problems. We would like to see more business owners and residents attending meetings,” he said.

The Malvern Business Forum consists of business owners, residents and the SAPS.

The forum meets monthly with sector managers to discuss safety issues.
