The day hoped to unite women together which celebrated them in addition to helping the charity.

Zahn said it was hosted in memory of those who fought the struggle for women’s rights.

“We decided to assist Door of Hope because the work they do is close to our hearts,” said Zahn.

“All our members are either mothers or grandmothers themselves so we thought it would be a good idea to assist Door of Hope.”

A week before the fund-raiser, a newborn baby was found in a wheelie bin on Seventh Avenue.

In shock, community members took to social media to express their concerns.

Zahn said the work the mission does aim to reduce the number of children abandoned in bins or elsewhere.

She said the mission cares for the babies until the age of two after which they are either adopted or placed in a foster home.

According to its website, Door of Hope has helped 1 613 children in the past 18 years.

There are currently 69 children in its care.

“I feel that society is often quick to condemn or criticise a mother who abandons their child,” said Zahn.

“We don’t always know the circumstances why the mother abandoned their child.”

She said when the members of the ladies’ section visited the mission they were shown letters which were often left with the children.

“The letters are indicative of how hard it was for those mothers to leave their children,” said Zahn.

“Sometimes we need to be more empathetic.”

Zahn said the community and golfers responded well to the event.

She said some golfers who could not participate in the event donated to the fund-raiser or sponsored other golfers to play.

Zahn said although this is the ladies’ sections first charity event, the groups hope to host more in the future.
