“We were encouraging women to get up and do something for themselves. We want to see women making a difference in their communities. We also want them to report any acts of abuse to their nearest police stations. We don’t want women to sit down and think that it’s normal for a woman to be beaten. They must take action,” said Cleveland SAPS’ social crime prevention officer, Sgt Olga Munwana.
Munwana said the station visits Mangolongolo informal settlement and gives talks to women on a regular basis.
“We don’t wait until it’s Women’s Month to show that we care about women. We have been hosting a number of events with them. We also started a women’s group which meets twice a month at Mangolongolo hall at 11am.
“There we discuss issues that affect women in general. We will also start such groups at other informal settlements around Cleveland SAPS precinct,” she said.
Carlton gym provided aerobics lessons as part of the day’s activities.
