Jeppe SAPS is appealing to the community to be vigilant when using social media.
This comes after the police arrested of a 32-year-old man for allegedly raping a woman (19) whom the accused had met on social media.
The suspect was arrested at Doran Street in Jeppestown on October 22.
Spokesperson for the station Capt Richard Munyayi said the woman and man, after meeting on social media, arranged a meeting.

The woman visited the suspect at his residential place accompanied by her friend.
“Upon arrival, the man welcomed and ushered them into his house. He offered to buy them something to drink but the victim’s friend told him that she needed to go back home to drop off the house keys.
“The man asked the woman to remain behind while her friend left. When the friend left, the man locked the door and started to touch her. When she refused, he pulled out a knife and threatened her. He raped her and threatened her by warning her not to tell anyone. He then opened the door for her to leave,” he said.
Munyayi said the victim went home and told her mother of what had happened.
“Her mother took her to the police station where a case was opened. Officers proceeded to the suspect’s house and arrested him. He was charged with rape and detained.

Munyayi said people should be careful of who they communicate with on social media.
“If they agree to go on a date, they should meet in a public and safe place where there are other people around. They should also be careful on what they drink and should avoid drinks that might be spiked with some drugs,” he said.
