Community cleans Illiondale

The clean-up, along Cecil Awrett Street, was the first of many expected to be held throughout the year.

Residents, Illiondale Wetland Buddies and members of AfriForum recently took to the Illiondale Wetland in the hope of improving the environment.

On January 19 the group cleaned a portion of the wetland and removed about 280kg of rubbish and debris in addition to a bathtub.

The clean-up, along Cecil Awrett Street, was the first of many expected to be held throughout the year.

Stacey van Rooyen, one of the organisers, said the clean-up was held in response to the effect litter and debris were having on water drainage in the area.

She explained that the litter contributed to rainwater not being able to flow freely under the street through stormwater infrastructure.

Garry Thomas, Illiondale resident, said the community wants to improve the wetland.

The next clean-up will be held at the end of March.

Stacey appealed to community members who own bakkies to join the clean-up to assist with the removal of the rubbish and debris.
