Dog owners warned about poisoning incidents

Police believe the dog poisonings are linked to house burglaries in the Cyrildene and Kensington areas.

Cleveland SAPS expressed concern over the alleged spate of dog poisonings in the police precinct.

Police believe the dog poisonings are linked to house burglaries in the Cyrildene and Kensington areas.

Spokesperson for Cleveland SAPS Capt Johan Jordaan said one poisoning incident occurred on Minerva Street in Kensington, on February 26.

He said a resident at the house noticed their dog fuming and unable to maintain its balance.

“The dog was rushed to a veterinary clinic in the area where it was determined that the dog had been poisoned,” said Jordaan.

He said the dog later died.

“The dog was left at the clinic for further treatment and the owner was later notified that the dog had died.”

Jordaan said a case of cruelty to animals had been opened at the station and is being investigated.

Larry Kraitzick, a veterinary doctor at Bruma Lake Veterinary Clinic, said he dealt with a similar case on February 19.

“The owner of a dog that was brought into our clinic on that morning had actually seen an attempted house burglary on his CCTV system. As soon as he rushed out, the would-be burglars fled.

“He found his dog lying in a pool of vomit and quickly brought it to us. The dog luckily pulled through. The owner was also lucky in that it appeared to him that nothing had been taken from his home,” said Kraitzick.
