Technology brings SAPS and community members together

”The app aims to bring communities closer to government services with a touch of a button.”

Moving with the times and finding innovative ways to assist citizens, the SAPS has launched its very own mobile application called the My SAPS app.

Launched in recent months, the app gives community members greater access to the SAPS directly from their phone.

It allows them to provide information and report crimes to the police, provides a list of the nearest police stations

After downloading the app from the Google Play or Apple store, users are informed of the purposes of the app and are given the choice to complete a profile or leave this section blank.

Police Ministry spokesperson Lirandzu Themba said the app, launched in partnership with Vodacom, is the first app of its kind in Africa.

It is designed to provide South Africans with greater access to the SAPS and allow them to report criminals and their activities

Police Minister Gen Bheki Cele said the My SAPS app will see police teaming up with technology to rid the streets of crime.

”The app aims to bring communities closer to government services with a touch of a button.

“It encourages anonymous tip-offs from members of the public that can assist with crime-fighting and for quicker responses to lawlessness committed.”

Cele said through the use of the app, SAPS is one step closer to turning the tide on crime.

When reporting a crime, the user will need to provide details of the crime which include (who, what, when, where and how they know about the crime).

Details and description should also be provided to help the SAPS create a profile of the suspect.

Once the report is submitted, users will receive a reference number which they can use to follow up on the matter reported.
