Feeding scheme resumes at Edenvale’s Khanyisa Trust
“Beneficiaries will not be allowed on the property and will have to line up on the pavement of Seventh Avenue.”
Staff at Khanyisa Trust are hard at work keeping the hungry in Edenvale fed following the organisation’s return to operation.
On June 15, the trust restarted its feeding scheme after it had temporarily been stopped during the lockdown.

The postponement of the feeding scheme was done to minimise the risk of the spread of Covid-19 and to not put the health of staff, volunteers and beneficiaries at risk.
Leading up to the lockdown the trust, which provided sit-down meals, provided a takeaway service to its beneficiaries.
Loraine von Hoesslin, secretary and executive committee member of the trust, said the resumed feeding scheme will operate similarly.
She said feeding will start at 10am and will continue for one or two hours, depending on how much food is available.
“Beneficiaries will not be allowed on the property and will have to line up on the pavement of Seventh Avenue.”

The trust will have two marshals who will ensure social distancing is obeyed and provide a hand sanitiser to those in line.
“Our pastor, Thulani Khumalo, will also assist the marshals and provide emotional and spiritual support to the beneficiaries.”
To ensure the propety was as clean as possible the trust was deep cleaned on June 9.
Loraine said the entrance gate to the property was modified in such a way that a portion of it can be opened so volunteers can dish up food.
She said the beneficiaries will put their containers through the gap to receive their meal.
Manager of Khanyisa Trust Dipuo Tekana said a transparent screen, similar to the ones installed to protect cashiers, will be installed on the gate to further minimise the spread of the virus.
Loraine said the trust has received some financial donations since the start of level five which assisted in covering the running costs of the trust.
“We are in desperate need of donations of food which will be used to make the soup for the beneficiaries.”
Items which community members can donate include, fresh vegetables, tinned food, maize meal, samp and rice.
