Edenvale SPCA looks forward to what 2021 will bring

“Although we can plan and have planned for the year ahead, last year taught us to take every day as a new day.”

The Edenvale SPCA looks forward to what the new year will bring to the branch. Manager Marita Acar met with the NEWS and gave some insight into what will transpire at the branch in the foreseeable future.

Marita said renovations to the property are expected to continue as contractors and builders return to work in the weeks ahead.

Last year upgrades on infrastructure on the property, such as the dog kennels, fencing, and other items, started and should be concluded this year.

“December was a busy time in sense of boarders; there were a few strays brought to us but not many,” said Marita.
She said on the last day of 2020, staff responded to a call in Illiondale where a dog was locked inside the property for the evening but had climbed on top of a counter surface and had broken a window.

“We called SOS Security to assist us and on arrival, the dog was found tangled in the window blinds and had lacerations from the broken glass.”

She said while trying to gain access to the property, the homeowners arrived. Marita said once the property owners returned, the dog was taken to a Kempton Park veterinary hospital for treatment.

Overall, Marita said adoptions from the branch have gone well, with community members adopting cats and dogs from the branch.

“During December it was a pleasure to have our established, long-term and regular volunteers on duty.” She said the volunteers who help the branch are part of the Edenvale SPCA family.

“Volunteers played a huge role by helping out during the festive season.” Marita said because of Covid-19, Edenvale SPCA is not taking on any more volunteers at this stage. “What continued to amaze us throughout the whole of 2020 was the support from the community,” highlighted Marita.

She said despite the tough times, community members continued to give where they could. This not only allowed the SPCA to care for the animals and cover running costs but to assist people who themselves were facing tough times and needed pet food.

One example of the charitable nature of Edenvale was the annual fund-raiser hosted by Our Pub in Sebenza.
The annual potjiekos competition raised over R37 000 for the branch.

Another example was the annual Dogs’ Dinner Fund fund-raising initiative which raised R135 965 over the four months it ran. The SPCA team thanked the community for its ongoing support and assistance. Marita said through the donations made by residents and businesses, the SPCA can continue to help pet owners struggling to feed their animals in its jurisdiction.

“Although we can plan and have planned for the year ahead, last year taught us to take every day as a challenge of its own. Looking to the year ahead, Edenvale’s SPCA staff is going to work through each day as it comes.”
