Nine arrested in Cleveland for illegal mining activities

The SAPS has confirmed the arrest of nine suspects during an operation targeting illegal mining in Cleveland.

According to SAPS, members of the Illicit Mining Unit conducted a raid on August 19, at the Jumpers informal settlement.

The suspects were arrested for illegal mining activities and contravening the Immigration Act.

Police also seized equipment used in illegal mining, including phendukas, generators, steel balls, spades, oxygen bottles, steel pots, crushing machines and stampers.

SAPS said the operation forms part of its ongoing commitment to combat illegal mining and protect local communities from the dangers associated with the practice. The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
