Temporary closure on Van Buuren Road for major roadworks

Resurfacing work being done by Sanral on Van Buuren Road between the two ramp terminals has resulted in a temporary road closure expected to last until the end of May.

Motorists and road users of  Road between the N3 Entry and Exit can expect a temporary closure of the section until the end of May.

South African National Roads Agency’s (Sanral) media relations manager, Lwando Mahlasela, said that during the evaluation of the road surface, this section was identified as requiring more intervention than would be achieved by resurfacing alone.

Therefore, the reconstruction of the pavement layers was deemed necessary to ensure the pavement’s longevity.

He further said the section of Van Buuren Road between the two ramp terminals is part of Sanral’s maintenance responsibility.

“This section of road is maintained as part of the periodic maintenance of the N3, just as other crossroads and interchanges. This ensures that the approaches to main interchanges are kept in an acceptable condition and do not negatively affect operations on the freeway system,” Mahlasela explained.

The road will operate as a two-way single-carriageway during construction, with adequate construction signage and all necessary traffic accommodation maintained, according to Mahlasela.

He added that pedestrians are allowed to use the existing sidewalks, as these will not be affected.

Mahlasela added, “The road closure has been monitored, and the measures seem to be adequate. Road users should be patient as is required with all road construction.”

Sanral said the road pavement structure and surfacing should be adequate for the next 15 to 20 years.
