Local runners prepare for Disc-Chem half-marathon

As 7 000 runners prepare to take to the streets of Bedfordview and Germiston for the annual Dis-Chem Half-Marathon, community members are asked for their patience and understanding during the race.

Set to be held on January 14, the half-marathon and fun run presented by Momentum Multiply will be hosted in partnership with Bedfordview Country Club Athletics.

The race route winds its way through the hills of Bedfordview, Morninghill and Primrose. Though unchanged the race provides runners with a challenging route and spectacular views.

Race director Charnia Yapp said the Bedfordview Country Club Athletics looks forward to hosting the 22nd edition of the race, which has been rebranded.

Health category marketing manager for Dis-Chem Brandon Fairweather said they are proud to continue their 22-year sponsorship of the event.

“The long-standing relationship with Bedfordview Country Club Athletics has served us well. We have no doubt the team will deliver another first-class event,” he said.

Yapp thanked all the event’s sponsors, including Smecta, TransAct and Centrum, for their contribution in ensuring the continued success of the event.

The head of Multiply Incentivised Wellness for Momentum Health Solutions, Marcia Eugenio, said the runners will earn rewards for making healthy choices and for every step they take to improve their overall health.

Last year the race was won by Desmond Mokgobu in a time of 1:06:41.

Elroy Gelant from Boxer Athletics Club finished second in 01:06:47 while third place went to Ian Slinger from Potch Track Club who finished in a time of 01:07:04.

The first woman to finish the half-marathon was Lesotho national Blandina Makatisi from Maxed Elite Athletics Club. She finished at 01:19:54.

Emma Pallant from Britain and Peak Athletic Club took second place in a time of 01:21:25 while Adele Broodryk of Murray and Roberts claimed third place with a time of 01:24:45.

The first woman to finish the 2023 half-marathon was Lesotho national Blandina Makatisi from Maxed Elite Athletics Club. She finished in 01:19:54.

Although entries closed on December 15 collection points are available at Dis-Chem Nicolway on January 11 between 09:30 and 16:00.

Dis-Chem Park Meadows on January 12 between 09:30 and 16:00 and at Virgin Active Bedfordview and on January 13 between 09:00-15:00.

The half-marathon starts in Riley Road at 06:00 and the 5km dash, which will also be timed, starts at 06:30.

The funds raised during the event will go to the Lambano Sanctuary for orphaned children with HIV and the Namaqua Dog and Donkey Foundation, which undertakes the sterilisation, vaccination and treatment of animals in informal settlements on the East Rand.

Having run through the greater Primrose area runners who participated in the 2023 marathon make their way down Townsend Street.

All donations by runners, over and above their entry fee, will be matched by the Dis-Chem Foundation.
