Edenvale karate star off to Youth Olympic qualifiers

“I really love the competition of the sport and doing well at events.”

Karate student Marinda Roetz was selected to represent South Africa at the 2018 Youth Olympic qualification tournament.

The 16-year-old Edenvale resident is set to compete against other karatekas from around the world later this year in Croatia.

If successful at the qualifiers, Roetz will compete at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires.

While in Croatia, Roetz will also take part in the Karate Youth World Cup.

“I am quite excited to have been given this opportunity. If I make it to the Olympics, it will be a massive achievement,” said Roetz.

Although this is not Roetz’ first time representing SA internationally, she is excited and confident.

With 13 years of karate experience behind her name, Roetz believes she will do well.

“Being selected for the qualifier has made me want to train harder and give it my all,” said Roetz.

From a very young age, Roetz had always taken an interest in the sport.

She described her interest in the sport as an intense passion.

While growing up, Roetz drew inspiration from her father whom she had always admired.

After taking up the sport her parents, Lucinda and Michael, supported her wholeheartedly.

Roetz said one day she just started practising and grew from there.

“As parents, we are extremely proud of what our daughter has achieved. It is really wonderful,” said Michael.

Marinda said what she most enjoys about karate is the competition of the sport.

“The feeling of doing well keeps me going,” she explained.

In order to be selected for the qualifiers, Marinda had to give the sport her all and ensure sure was at the top of her game.

In one week Marinda can spend up to 17 hours in the dojo keeping fit and training.

“I have a lot of confidence so I always push myself further.”

“I see myself as a future karate world champion. It doesn’t matter if I win or lose I always keep on pushing to become better.”
