Man robbed of R10 000 in Northmead

He was forced to drive under gunpoint.

A motorist was robbed of R10 000 at gunpoint in Northmead today (February 22).

Capt Nomsa Sekele, Benoni SAPS spokesperson, said the 31-year-old man withdrew the money from a bank.

Sekele said the victim was waiting for a robot to turn green at the intersection of Tom Jones Street and Victoria Avenue when an armed man jumped into the VW Polo he was driving.

“He ordered him to drive and stop when he is told to,” said Sekele.

Two men in a silver Toyota Etios, which did not have number plates, followed the pair.

Along 13th Avenue in Northmead, the gunman in the Polo instructed the man to stop.

The three men then robbed the victim of the money and several other items, including the Polo’s key, before they made off in the Etios.

No injuries were reported.

Sekele said police believe the man was followed from the bank where he withdrew money.

She said there have been several cases of bank followings and robberies in Benoni since December.

She urged people to rather conduct EFTs than withdraw cash from banks or ATMs.
