Charisma Church celebrates 100 years
The Northmead-based Charisma Church (formerly known as the Apostolic Faith Mission) turns 100 this year.
To mark the milestone, the church held a carnival on April 16.
Members of the church and the community got to experience a day filled with fun for the whole family.
There were different activities to be enjoyed by both young and old, including live entertainment, kiddies’ games, a pageant, car displays, and art and craft stalls.
The assembly was started in 1916 by Pastor EG Henning, in a small shop in Swan Street.
In 1969, the congregation moved to Cypress Street in Northmead.
Pastor Arnold Uys said it was a big honour for him and the church to celebrate this day.
“We wanted to do something fun that will be enjoyed by the community; not every church gets an opportunity to last for 100 years,” said Uys.
Today, the church is led by Uys and the management of the church.
Over the years the church has been led by several pastors.
Uys said that on Thursday, April 14, they held a service with the senior citizens, where a number of pastors that served the congregation over the 100 years gave talks.
“We as Charisma Church are not called to function between four walls,” he said.
“Jesus said we are the church, therefore He lives in us.
“So, we want to be the church wherever we are for everyone in need of help in the community of Benoni and Northmead.”
The church also manages two Northmead-based orphanages in House Thandi and House Charis.
