Ask for identification from meter readers

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality strongly advises homeowners to insist on seeing the identity card of anyone who claims to be an employee of the metro, prior to them gaining entry or commencing work on the premises.

Council wishes to assure residents that all its contractors, including meter readers, have a Municipal Identity Card, carrying their photograph, on them and they are supposed to present the card at any business or private premises that they visit to do a job.

The assurance comes after an incident in Bedfordview, when an alleged robber impersonated a municipal meter reader, thereby raising questions on the identification of municipal field workers.

“We have an obligation to ensure that our employees and contractors produce positive identification,” said.

“In the same breath, we ask residents to be vigilant and to request positive identification.”

If they are not satisfied, residents have the right to phone the Emergency Call Centre on 011-458-0911 or 10177, or, when using cellphones, to dial 112 (fire, ambulance and Metro Police).

Other important numbers community members should be aware of include the Ekurhuleni Municipal Service Complaints line 0860-543-000, the SAPS Flying Squad 10111 and their local police station.
