Moths commemorate battle of El Alamein
Over 30 Memorable Order of Tin Hats (Moth) members commemorated the World
War Two battle of El Alamein, at the General Van Der Spuy Shellhole, in
Northmead, on Sunday, last week.
The commemorative service and parade drew together Moths from the Reveille,
Cosy Corner, Windy Corner, Shellburst and Boksburg Gap shellholes.
The parade started with the General Van Der Spuy Old Bill (chairman), Kenny Venish,
reading a poem and then speaking of the decisive battle at El Alamein.
Of the 13 500 British soldiers who died, went missing or were wounded in the battle, 509 were South African and 16 were Rhodesian.
The General Van Der Spuy Shellhole has commemorated Al Alamein since its inception in 1991, when the shellhole had five Al Alamein veterans, who fought at the battle in North Africa, as members.
