Bikers do good

All roads led to the Benoni Northerns Sports Grounds, for the 31st annual Motorcycle Toy Run, on November 24.

Approximately 22 000 people were at the event and 24 750 toys were collected for the less privileged, a little fewer than last year’s 27 000.

“We understand that, due to the financial constraints, people can’t give as much as they would like to,” said organising committee chairman Graeme Cartwright.

This year there were four mass rides, that left from Blockhouse Engen 1-Stop, Irene Village Mall, Meadowdale Mall and the SilverStar Casino.

Bikers and residents kept themselves entertained by looking at the various bikes, shopping at the stalls and drinking a few beers with their mates.

Jacaranda FM DJ Paul Rotherham was the master of ceremonies and kept the crowd laughing between the performances of the two bands, Tryst and Back Bone.

Lakeside Mall provided a children’s play area that had a number of rides and jumping castles.

“On behalf of the committee, we would like to thank everyone for attending the event and the Benoni residents for their all their patience, because a number of roads were closed,” said event convener Pete Beart.

The Motorcycle Toy Run will again be held in Benoni next year.

“We would also like to thank all the sponsors for helping out again this year,” concluded Cartwright.
