Couples robbed at Danie Taljaard Park

Following robbery incidents involving two couples this past weekend, at Danie Taljaard Park, police warn residents not to visit the park.

The first couple was robbed on Friday, January 10, at around 1pm.

Benoni police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said the couple was sitting outside their car when the incident occurred.

“A man approached them and asked for the time; after 30 minutes, he returned with three others,” said Sekele.

They produced knives and robbed the victims of cash and cellphones.

“They also assaulted the man with an iron rod and he was so badly injured that he had to be taken to hospital,” said Sekele.

The second couple was robbed on Sunday, January 12.

Two men armed with knives approached them at around 12.30pm.

“They searched the victim’s car and took cellphones, the woman’s handbag and the man’s wallet.”

They also took their jewellery.

Sekele said two cases of robbery have been opened and that the police are investigating.

“We would like to alert residents not to visit the park,” she said.

She, however, also said that the police will monitor the park.
