An ‘xplosion’ of talent at Sibikwa

On Friday, March 21, dancers from around South Africa gathered under one roof, to battle it out on stage for the title of this year's Sibikwa Dance Xplosion champions.

A total of 23 dance groups each performed an eight to 10-minute dance extract, at the sixth annual Dance Xplosion hosted by Sibikwa Arts Centre.

A variety of well-choreographed entries, ranging from hip-hop to traditional African dances and gumboot dancing, kept this event entertaining till the end.

The groups were judged by David Thatanelo April, who is the owner of his own dance consulting company, in addition to having a long history in the dance industry.

Judging was based on technicality, personality/confidence, creativity, musicality, performance/presentation, costumes and stage usage.

April said choosing a winner is not particularly difficult at these occasions, as there is a mixture of arts and different talents on different levels that can be considered, but the decision is ultimately based on the overall impression.

Sibikwa resident choreographer and coordinating manager Yuhl Headman said his motivation for this event is for dancers to “begin a conversation”.

“We want to push them to collaborate, work and learn from each other,” he explained.

The group who took first place are Intuthuko Art Productions, who carried off the grand prize of R5 000.

Youth Channel Group were the runners up, earning R3 000.

Via Simunye Youth Club placed third, winning a prize of R1 500, and Future Stars Theatre Productions took the fourth prize of R500.
