Police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said the warning follows several cases of robbery reported in the past few weeks.
“We urge people to be vigilant at all times, as handbags are snatched, while cellphones and money are taken by force,” said Sekele.
She added that some of the crime happens due to negligence by the community.
Walking around with earphones hanging or chatting on social media indicates that a person is in possession of a cellphone and all these things make them a target.
She added that chatting on social media while walking also detracts people from noticing their surroundings.
“We are approaching the busiest time of the year, when criminals do not hesitate to use whatever opportunity they can to get quick money — hence, we urge people to be vigilant,” said Sekele.
