Kate is the cream of the crop among domestic workers
A cook-off which was held at Hirsch’s Boksburg, to determine the final winner of the Benoni Domestic Worker of the Year title, on Saturday, February 7, was won by the deserving Nombuyiselo (Kate) Ndungwana, of Farrarmere.
The winners of the monthly competitions, teamed up with their employers and went head-to-head for the winning title.
All chefs for the day had to cook a dish of their choice with a budget of R50 and then create a left-over lunch from the supper they had made.
Alongside the proactive and enthusiastic contestants, the judges — Lindiwe Mashile of Delonghi and Hirsch’s public relations officer, Brigitte Thysse — were hard at work judging the contestants while they cooked.
The participants were judged on their teamwork, technique and cleanliness during the cook-off.
Each dish presented was judged on appearance, creativity, uniqueness and flavour, as well as adherence to the budget and the 40-minute time limit allocated.
This judging was then combined with the mark given on the monthly winning motivations, presented pre-event.
Team “KK”, Kimberley Bennett (her employer) and Kate, stole the show with their macaroni “BBQ bacon and bolognaise” supper dish and “cottage pie and herbs” lunch dish.
This, combined with Kim’s motivation, has given Kate the title of the Domestic Worker of the Year.
Kate was rewarded with a R5 000 voucher and a queen-sized bed and base set to the value of R3 000.
A thrilled Kate said: “I want to give the bed to my daughter and use the R5 000 to buy her a tablet.”
Those who were in the store during the event, hosted by Hirsch’s Boksburg and Roman Govender of Mzansi Media, also enjoyed a flash mob, performed by a Zumbathon group, and a prize give-away.
Thysse congratulated all the finalists.
“We value all of your efforts and enthusiasm through the duration of the competition,” she said.
She thanked Gas Solutions, Delonghi, Mzansi Media, Elba, Smeg and everyone who supported the event.
