Etwatwa police officer arrested for possession of stolen goods

A 33-year-old police constable was arrested at the Etwatwa Police Station yesterday, for the possession of a stolen Caterpillar Tractor-Loader-Backhoe (TLB).

The officer, who is stationed at the Etwatwa Police Station, was arrested at around 1pm.

The arrest came after a private investigator approached police with information on the whereabouts of the stolen TLB.

Benoni SAPS cluster spokesperson WO Ramothakhi Maqabe said the TLB was stolen from an Ekurhuleni depot on the corner of Snake Road and Golden Drive, on December 13.

Two weeks ago, the suspect drove the vehicle to Vukuzenzele Sand and Bricks, in Etwatwa, where it was parked.

It is unclear where the TLB was stashed from the time it was stolen till the time it was driven to the Etwatwa business.

Police are investigating to determine whether two trucks found on the same premises, apparently also owned by the constable, belong to him legally or whether they were stolen.

The owner of Vukuzenzele Sand and Bricks is believed to not be involved in the theft of the stolen vehicles.

It’s unclear whether permission was given to park the TLB at Vukuzenzele Sand and Bricks.

The suspect is facing charges of possession of suspected stolen goods.

He is expect to appear in the Daveyton Magistrates Court soon.
