Tips to reduce the chance of your vehicle being stolen:

• People must, at all times, be cautious of their surroundings.
• People must take extra precautionary measures when locking their vehicles, especially those with central locking systems.
• A steering wheel lock can prevent car theft, as it takes the thief time to unlock it.
• Avoid parking your vehicle in deserted areas.
• Avoid parking your vehicle where there are no car guards.
• Try to fit an alarm and/or an anti-theft device to your vehicle.
• At night, park in well lit areas.
• Do not leave your keys in the ignition, even for a minute. It takes a car thief seconds to steal your vehicle.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said Toyotas and Volkswagens are currently the most targeted vehicles.

She added that criminals will, however, steal any car if the opportunity presents itself.
