Two Benoni banks receive bomb threats, police on scene

Police are stationed at two Absa banks in the Benoni CBD after both banks received bomb threats this morning (March 23).

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said the Absa bank on Tom Jones Street and Cranbourne Avenue, and another in the Benoni Plaza, received calls shortly after one another.

The bank at the corner of Tom Jones Street and Cranbourne Avenue received a call at 11.35am.

“Someone called the switchboard and said the bank is going to explode in two minutes,” said Sekele.

Staff closed the bank.

“A person called (the bank) again and said it’s still going to happen.

Sekele said the Absa in the Benoni Plaza received a similar call.

Both banks have been closed.

The Benoni SAPS and K9-unit are on scene awaiting the bomb squad.
