Fear that sewage may be flowing into Homestead
Sewage is believed to be flowing into Homestead Dam from a storm water drain on Mercury Street, in Farrarmere.
Clr Mary Goby was notified of this problem on Monday, August 31, when she received complaints from residents at a nearby complex about the smell.
Dr Heather Pearson, from the Mercury Street Veterinary Hospital, has also reported the matter a number of times.
“This has been an on-going problem since August, last year, and nothing has been done,” said Pearson.
She was told by a sewerage company, who visited the affected area, that the problem is a sewerage pipe overflowing into the storm water drain and then into Homestead Dam.
Goby said: ”This is because of the poor infrastructure; the pipes in the Benoni area are old.”
She suspects the problem has been on-going for a while and has become an environmental issue.
Goby said she would arrange for water tests to be conducted, to determine if sewage is, indeed, flowing into the dam.
The municipality was asked for comment but none had been received at the time of publishing.
