#knowyourbenoni – Mike Konstadopoulos involved in family business since leaving school

Mike Konstadopoulos was born in Benoni and said he has been working at his family-owned business since he finished high school.

His wife characterised him as someone with a good heart who cares for others.

She said he is always friendly and said he has good family values.

BCT: Why do you like living in Benoni?

MK: My whole network is here and everybody I know is here.

Everything is in Benoni.

BCT: Where did you go to school?

MK: I was in Arbor Primary School and then at Benoni High School.

I finished my school career at Damelin, but I see myself as a Benoni High School graduate.

BCT: Tell us about your family.

MK: I am married with three children.

My parents moved to Benoni from Greece in the early 1960s: my late mother in 1963 and my father in 1964.

They said they saw better opportunities in South Africa.

They opened the business 43 years ago in September of 1974.

BCT: Do you have any hobbies?

MK: I used to play squash at Benoni Lake and I used to play soccer for the Benoni Northern Sports Club for about four or five years, but I don’t play anymore.

My sons, however, now play soccer for the club.

BCT: Tell us about your work.

MK: I work at Hellenic Glass and have been there since leaving school.

We sell specialised glass products.

We can even print photographs on glass, though you have to have a very good quality image, otherwise it will pixelate.

We then fit the glass with a frame and can insert it into a light box.

We have done various projects with printed glass.

For example, we printed a skyline of a Lebanese city for a house in Ebotse and we have also done one of the San Francisco bridge.

We have also expanded our products to specialised, frameless glass.

Our customers are very loyal – we have people coming in regularly who have been supporting us for 30 to 40 years.

We have had a relationship with these people for so many years.

But we also provide earth moving and construction companies with products.

BCT: What are your plans for the future?

MK: I would like to grow my business to be a more exclusive and more specialised company.

As I said frameless, but also high-end products.
