Anti-corruption unit to handle wrongful arrest
MacKenzie Park resident Mariam Shaikh said she and her husband, Maratab Ali, have closed their cellular repair store in Tom Jones Street after Ali was allegedly wrongfully attacked and arrested for being an illegal immigrant.
The City Times reported on the incident on October 23.
Shaikh explained: “My husband is a foreigner and the police know that and it has been in the media.”
She explained they now fear further victimisation.
“He is usually alone at the store. I am eight months pregnant and we only have one car, so if something happens at the store, there is no way I will be able to get there,” she explained.
Ali said he was attacked and wrongfully arrested in his wife’s shop on Tom Jones Street on October 13.
The incident allegedly happened after he repaired the LED screen of a customer’s phone.
Ali said he let him verify that the screen was in a working condition before the customer left the shop.
The unnamed man agreed and left, but returned later that day with a broken screen insisting on a refund.
Ali explained he could not refund the customer as the customer had agreed that the screen was in a working condition and he (namely Ali), had spent the money received for the repair of the LED screen part. The customer then returned with an alleged captain and colonel from the Benoni police.
Ali claims the two police men attacked him and took R550 from his back pocket.
Ali also took two videos.
Shaikh said she was contacted by a person known to them only as a warrant officer Nell in an attempt to resolve the matter.
Gauteng police spokesperson Lt Col Lungelo Dlamini said a “case of assault was registered in Benoni and was transferred to the Anti-Corruption Unit for further investigation.”
“The victim is given feedback about the progress of the investigation,” he concluded.
