BCT: Tell us about life growing up.
DU: When I was young I lived in Springs, but when I was 21 a wealthy family helped me move to Benoni in pursuit of my career as a hairdresser
I matriculated from Damelin and studied hairstyling at a local academy.
I am mostly self-taught and I used to do my lecturers’ hair.
BCT: Tell us about your career.
DU: I have just always loved doing hair.
When I was 12 I used to get on my bicycle and blow wave people’s hair for a small fee.
I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.
I always knew I wanted to do hair, but I never thought it would be this rewarding.
I serve as a hairstylist, confidante, councillor and as a friend for most of my clients.
I have international clients – one in London and one in New York.
I live my whole life through the eyes of my clients – it feels like they take me to the places and events they talk about.
I used to have a salon in Rothsay Street in the CBD for about four or five years, but 20 years ago I moved to a salon in the Atlas Mall.
We are still very much Benoni focussed, even though the salon is technically in Boksburg.
BCT: What makes Benoni special for you?
DU: There is a long list of things that make Benoni such a great town.
We actually do stand together and people here know there is power in unity.
It is also a giving and loving community.
I have so many friends who are constantly doing charity work and fund-raising.
Everyone in Benoni is also well-connected to each other.
The one thing that really stands out about Benonians is integrity.
The people I deal with have such a high value system – they are not judgemental and they allow you to grow and develop just as they have grown and developed over the years.
My whole life is a life of gratitude towards Benoni. It is just such a powerful and formidable town.
