St Francis learner creates paperless parking app

The software is a paperless and contactless parking system for malls.

Young innovator Sphephelo Mabena (17) has created the Future Parking (FP) software to solve the problem of having long queues at pay points at malls.

The software is a paperless and contactless parking system for malls.

He said due to Covid -19, there has been a huge gap in the mall parking industry and this gap led him to develop the software system.

The St Francis College learner recently developed the “4local” app after he witnessed a verbal fight among taxi passengers about miscalculated change.Mabena explained how the FP software works; customers just have to scan the special FP quick response (QR) code using their FP mobile app.

“There is absolutely no need for opening car windows when scanning the FP QR codes at the gates. You can scan from the inside of your car since, car windows are transparent,” said Mabena.

“However, the users will not be able to scan the special FP QR codes with an ordinary QR code scanner, for security reasons.”

He said one of the benefits of the FP software is that it generates an e-parking ticket, meaning you cannot lose it compared to a physical one.

“The FP system is paperless and it does not contribute to carbon footprint. Global warming is evident in 2020, we should play our part,” he said.

“The FP software is way ahead of its time, so it will take some time for it to mature. However, in two years, I see it being used by world-class malls.”

The Daveyton resident said after the City Times published his article in August, he received excellent reception about his app.

He previously told the City Times that he has always had a passion for technology and he taught himself computer programming in Java using YouTube tutorials.

Mabena plans to study computer science after matric as he enjoys mathematics and physical science because they have one thing in common – problem-solving.

His message to his peers is that the law of attraction states that at a quantum level, you attract what you think about, meaning you can never win if you have never dreamt of becoming a winner.

“Apply the law of attraction in your life and you will witness the difference. Remember that in order for the law of attraction to work, you have to put in the work,” he said.
