Benoni local takes on National Motocross Championship

The 2020 SA Motocross championship will wrap up with another double-header in Bloemfontein over the weekend of October 24 and 25.

Slade Smith (19), a Rynfield resident, recently took part in the second and third rounds of The Cannabis Energy South African National Motocross Championship which was their first race being back since February.

Under strict Covid-19 rules the championship was held at Thunder Valley Motocross track in Pietermaritzburg, Kwazulu-Natal.

In the last championship, which was held in February, Slade left Port Elizabeth feeling a sense of pride being in third overall in the 250cc MX2 Class.

He has now moved up to second place overall in the championship after round two and three in Pietermaritzburg, setting himself up for a chance at the 250cc MX2 national championship title as he guns for the fourth and fifth rounds, which will be held in Bloemfontein.

Sara Martin, mother to Slade, said that he had a bit of a rocky start in the beginning.

“Slade had some bad luck in one of the heats in PE and again in Pietermaritzburg, but has managed to hold on for a fighting chance at glory,” explained Sara.

“Slade races for Yamaha Flore Store On Trend Summit Racing, and hopes to give his sponsors some good coverage by winning the title, a huge ask, but not impossible.”
