The Putfontein SAPS is urging women to avoid walking alone, especially in open veld areas or meeting strangers who promised them jobs.
This comes after several rape and robbery cases were reported at the station recently.
Putfontein SAPS spokesperson Sgt Raider Ubisi said there have been several cases where the victims were offered jobs.
When they arrive at the meeting spot, a man threatens them with a knife and then rapes and robs them of their belongings.
“In other incidents, the suspect would offer to walk with them along the veld as a shortcut to their destination.
“While walking he pulls out a knife and rapes the victims,” said Ubisi.
“We advise members of the community to walk in groups and meet strangers in a public place.”
The reported incidents occurred during the day.
Police provided women with some safety tips:
• Always scream for help if attacked.
• Avoid deserted areas where they are no people.
• Avoid the company of men you don’t know.
• Avoid walking in unlit areas and taking shortcuts.
• Don’t walk alone, rather walk in a group.
• Report any incidents or suspicious persons to the nearest police station.
