The price of petrol went beyond R21 a litre last week. The City Times took to the streets to ask motorists and consumers how they are being affected by the latest increase.
Teboho Tsekeli (Daveyton): I am a student and have to travel from Daveyton to Johannesburg every day. I used to spend R100 on petrol. But due to the increase, I now have to spend a R150 a day.
Gugulethu Mbatha (businesswoman): Operational costs have gone up and at a time when we are still recovering from Covid-19. Now there's going to be a lot of prioritising – less travelling and a lot of things will be cut, as we have to buy petrol at a higher price.
Gloria Nkosi (Crystal Park): I work in Sandton and am a breadwinner for two households. The president must do something about this because I am now forced to spend less on food to save money for petrol. I can't use public transport because it's unreliable and unsafe. These increases are affecting me severely.
Lindi Mokone (Northmead): It has a big impact on me because I am an unemployed pensioner. I used to spend R800 on petrol and now it is R1 000. I have grandchildren to look after. Now I can't afford some household items as the price of food has gone up too.
