One of the six suspects accused of being in possession of counterfeit money was granted bail on June 15, during a bail application in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court.
The other suspects, four men and a woman, were denied bail.
The group were arrested in April when they were found in possession of notes worth R4 500.
Their arrest happened after a cashier suspected a R200 note one of the suspects used to buy alcohol at a liquor outlet in Bayley Street, Farrarmere, was bogus.
The suspect was detained at the liquor outlet while his five accomplices fled in a white Audi.
Police, however, were swift in arresting them near the Gillooly’s interchange and the counterfeit money was found in their vehicle.
The group is believed to have been targeting businesses in Benoni and other areas using counterfeit money to buy goods.
Their next court appearance is on July 12.
