Police recover unlicensed firearm

The suspect was detained and charged for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

A 31-year-old man was arrested on November 21 when he was found in possession of an unlicensed .38 special revolver.

According to Captain Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the Benoni Police Station, officers were patrolling Cranbourne Avenue at night when they noticed two suspicious-looking men walking in the street.

“Officers proceeded to search the suspects upon which the revolver was discovered,” she said.

“The suspect was unable to produce a valid licence for the firearm and was arrested. The weapon will be sent for forensic and ballistic testing to ascertain whether it may be linked to other crimes.”

The station commander, Brigadier Sudesh Sookraj applauded the members for being vigilant and removing yet another illegal firearm from the streets.
