SAPS take guns, ammo off streets

Some of the firearms allegedly belong to deceased officers.

The police recovered five unlicensed firearms, 65 live ammunition, nine ammunition magazines and two gun holsters in an intensified raid at the Actonville Hostel.

Police investigations revealed that the firearms were reported stolen from various police stations, and some owners are deceased.

This operation, aimed at eradicating the proliferation of illegal firearms in communities, was done in collaboration with the Actonville SAPS, Crime Prevention Wardens and private security companies.

The police, Crime Prevention Wardens and private security companies raided the Actonville Hostel recently.

According to SAPS Ekurhuleni district communications officer Captain Neldah Sekgobela, it is alleged that while the police patrolled the hostel, they received a tip-off about a man in possession of firearms at a certain block.

“The police proceeded to the man’s room, and while searching it, they discovered the firearms,” said Sekgobela.

The man failed to produce the firearms licenses.

He was arrested immediately and charged and has appeared in court.
