WATCH: Mock elections at SPARK Rynfield

Learners voted for their favourite among these four categories: Anything but school shoes, anything but school bag, favourite superhero or character day and funky hairstyle day.

In their efforts to make learning more engaging and effective while having fun, SPARK School Rynfield in collaboration with the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) hosted a mock election on April 26 ahead of the 2024 national and provincial elections.

The mock election formed part of the school’s theme ‘School Democracy Week’. It was aimed at educating learners about the election process and the power of voting.

A mock voting station with ballot boxes, voting booths and dummy ballot papers was set up to give learners an insight into how elections are conducted.

For the first time ever, Sibusiso Zondi of SPARK School Rynfield voted at his school on April 26.
A thumbs up for her favourite theme is Musa Dlamini putting her ballot paper in the box.

To make this fun, learners had to vote for their favourite among these four categories: Anything but school shoes, anything but school bag, favourite superhero or character day and funky hairstyle day.

According to their grades, learners from grade R to seven excitedly stood in long queues to cast their votes on what theme the school should organise for term three. Their thumbnails were marked with a black ink marker.

Before the voting, IEC official Precious Mkize gave a presentation about the role of the IEC. She shared that special votes can be cast two days before the election and there is home visit voting but residents must apply between April 17 and May 3.

The principal, Vuyelwa Tau, said, “We decided to organise this event to educate the learners about the importance of exercising their right to vote. We have infused this voting day practical in line with the school’s themed Thursdays held biweekly.

“Our theme ideas are linked around what’s currently happening. It’s also just a fun way to get learners to enjoy coming to school and have something to look forward to.”

The favourite superhero or character won with 157 votes.
