UPDATE: Five men taken for questioning following CIT heist
Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said the men were later released.
Five people were taken in for questioning at Boksburg North Police Station on June 17 in connection with the cash-in-transit (CIT) heist which occurred at the corner of Derby Avenue and Lanyon Road in Lakefield on June 15.
Two security guards were rushed to hospital after they suffered injuries during the CIT robbery.
According to Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the men were later released after the police couldn’t link them to the crime.
On the day of the incident, a gang of about 10 men who were driving in three different cars, a white BMW, a silver BMW and a light VW, attacked an armoured vehicle which was transporting cash.

“The cash van was forced to stop and the suspects ordered the security guards out of the van. It is alleged that the suspects, thereafter, planted explosive devices inside the vehicle and detonated it to access the cash.”
Masondo said the suspects escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash.
“Two of the guards were taken to a local hospital after they sustained injuries. They are in a serious but stable condition,” said Masondo.
Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects and investigations are continuing.
