Veteran paddler takes on Berg River challenge

He finished the race in a combined time of 33:07:42

Benoni paddler Wayne Taylor secured a top 20 position in the 240km four-day Berg River Canoe Marathon in the Western Cape from July 3 to 6.

Taylor finished the event 14th in the grandmasters’ category in a combined time of 33:07:42 after four tough days paddling from Paarl to Veldrift.

The paddler completed day one of the race, covering 62.1km from Paarl to Zonquasdrift, in 08:43:16. He covered the 45.7km distance on day two in 07:04:28 and paddled the 74.8km on the third day in 09:06:58.

He concluded the competition on July 6 with a 56.5km paddle from Zoutkloof to the finish in Veldrift to complete the race 71st overall and 14th in his category.

The main race was won by Tom Lovemore in 18:39:00 for his first title. Stephanie van der Heyde won the women’s race in 21:59:54.
