Officers also shut down illegal shebeens in and around Benoni, seizing 465,530 ml of alcohol, dagga, illicit cigarettes, and groceries.

Traffic flow on Great North Road, after the Brentwood Park Road intersection, was a bit slower than usual on January 23 due to a SAPS conducting Operation Shanela, which resulted in 25 arrests and 37 traffic fines amounting to R17 500 being issued.

During the roadblock, which began early in the morning, vehicles were stopped and searched by SAPS officers, EMPD, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, Home Affairs officials, CPF, and other stakeholders.

The operation was led by Ekurhuleni District deputy commissioner Brigadier Lebohang Machakela.

Motorists were also verified on SAPS’s Person Verification System.

According to Ekurhuleni District communications officer Captain Nelda Sekgobela, 23 people were arrested for being illegal immigrants and two others for possession of and dealing drugs.

Officers also shut down illegal shebeens in and around Benoni, seizing over 450 000ml of alcohol as well as dagga, illicit cigarettes and groceries.

On January 22, 205 suspects were arrested by detectives during the tracing of individuals wanted for various crimes.

“Among the suspects, 128 were arrested for contact crimes, 14 for contact-related crimes, 44 for property-related crimes, 44 for other serious crimes and 37 for gender-based violence incidents,” said Sekgobela.

Later in the day, an Imbizo was held at Lindelani Squatter Camp to address community concerns about crime.

Residents were encouraged to report criminal activities. The contact numbers of Benoni SAPS management were shared in case of delayed assistance.
