As part of Operation Shenela, the EMPD Taxi Task Team, in conjunction with Gauteng Traffic, impounded 13 minibus taxis in Benoni on January 23.
Vehicles were seized and taken to the Benoni provincial pound for failing to meet the requirements of the National Road Traffic Act 93/1996.
“Upon inspecting the vehicles, EMPD Specialized Services officers found that among other infringements the vehicles were operating without license discs, using incorrect permits and not having the correct operator cards,” said EMPD spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.
“The overall condition of the vehicles also did not meet the requirements of the National Road Traffic Act.”
Dlamini urged all minibus taxi owners to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy while operating as public transport and scholar transport in the City of Ekurhuleni.
“Failure to comply will result in vehicles being removed from the road,” he said.
