Eggsplorer Challenge brings fun and learning to Homestead Dam

Laughter and excitement filled the air at Homestead Dam on April 12 as children ran around, carefree and full of energy, during the Eggsplorer Challenge, a fun and educational fundraising event hosted by the Benoni SPCA and Homestead Helpers, in collaboration with the 9th Benoni Scout Group and CMS.
The sunny morning featured interactive stations and engaging challenges that kept youngsters entertained while educating them about animal care, nature, and community values.
According to Nina Visser, of Homestead Helpers, the initiative aimed to raise funds for the maintenance of Homestead Dam and its surrounding areas, as well as for the Benoni SPCA.

The event also helped raise awareness for the work of Scouts.
“We are trying to provide a space where people can enjoy the outdoors and have a recreational facility that is beautiful and safe. Today, we also educated people about nature and how they can maintain a healthy balance in the environment,” said Visser.
Children took part in various activities, including Nature’s Corner, where they learned about local bird species and fun facts about each one. They were also introduced to water plants such as hyacinths and water lilies, with real-life examples used to show how these plants reproduce through seeds and runners.

Kids also had their faces painted and posed for photos with the Easter Bunny, played by Savanna Williams, who, despite the heat, kept her bunny suit on and won the hearts of many young attendees.
Other highlights included Pin the Tail on the Bunny and a golden Easter egg hunt, where three lucky winners were awarded prizes.
Benoni SPCA vice-chairperson Monique Quenet said the day was a resounding success.
“It’s been an incredibly successful morning, a lovely outing in beautiful surroundings. It was great to see parents interacting with their children, off their phones, and helping them with the activities,” she said.
