Become a puppy raiser for a future guide dog

The South African Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind is urgently appealing to dog lovers to open their hearts and homes by becoming puppy raisers, and you could be the perfect fit.

Imagine playing a vital role in a puppy’s journey to becoming a confident, life-changing guide dog for someone visually impaired.

As a puppy raiser, your care and commitment will help shape a future of independence for someone in need.

What does puppy raising involve?
Puppy raising is a deeply rewarding experience that starts when the puppy is about eight weeks old and continues until around 16 months of age.

During this period, raisers attend weekly training sessions at the association’s facility and in public settings.

While there are some restrictions during the first 16 weeks, raisers are encouraged to involve the puppy in everyday adventures.

When the puppy reaches 16 months, it returns to the association for formal training.

However, puppy raisers may still enjoy weekends and holidays with their furry friend. Once fully trained, the dog is matched with its new owner ready to make a lasting difference.

Are you the right fit?
The association is looking for individuals who are:
• Dog lovers.

• Eighteen years or older.

• Calm and patient.

• Physically fit and capable of caring for a puppy.

• Flexible with their schedule.

• Able to attend weekday training sessions for 21 weeks.

• In possession of a valid driver’s licence.
