Putfontein SAPS hosts mental health awareness day for officers

A local police station ran a wellness event to help officers manage stress and improve mental well-being.

To promote holistic well-being among its members, the Putfontein SAPS recently held a mental health awareness campaign to teach officers about the importance of prioritising their mental and emotional health.

Recognising the immense pressure police officers face in their daily duties – from responding to traumatic incidents to dealing with high-stress environments – the campaign created a safe space for officers to open up, seek help and learn practical coping strategies.

It featured insightful talks by social workers, psychologists and financial advisors. These experts highlighted how unaddressed mental health challenges like anxiety, depression, and burnout can significantly impact an officer’s performance on duty, as well as their personal and financial well-being.

A key message was the importance of early intervention. Officers were encouraged to speak out and seek support before stress and trauma manifest in more serious health or behavioural issues.

Furthermore, the officers learnt tools for identifying early warning signs, which will help them reduce the stigma surrounding mental health.

Additionally, financial advisors addressed the close link between mental health and financial stability. They explained how mental strain often leads to poor financial decisions, which in turn lead to stress. Practical tips were offered on budgeting, managing debt and planning for long-term financial wellness.

This initiative formed part of a broader effort by the station’s leadership to prioritise the health of their personnel through ongoing wellness programmes and professional support services.

Members could also have voluntary screenings done by professional nurses to check for common illnesses, their blood pressure, HIV, diabetes and cholesterol.
